What you need

  • An iPhone with iOS 17 or later and the MacMermaid app.
  • A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later running MacMermaid for Mac.
  • A MacMermaid account, signed in on both with the same account.

Get started

  1. Install MacMermaid for Mac, open it and sign in. Sign in with Apple isn't available on the Mac yet: use Google, or email sign-in with the email address shown in the iPhone app under Account.
  2. On your Mac, allow Screen Recording and Accessibility when MacMermaid asks (System Settings › Privacy & Security). They are needed to see the screen and to click and type for you.
  3. Put your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi as your Mac. Open MacMermaid on your iPhone, allow Local Network access, and scan the QR code shown on your Mac, or enter the code it shows.
  4. Ask for something, for example "Open Notes and write a shopping list". The first time, MacMermaid explains what is sent for AI processing and asks for your permission.

Using MacMermaid

  • Approvals: before actions such as sending, deleting or buying, MacMermaid asks you to approve on your iPhone.
  • Follow-ups: send more instructions from your iPhone while a task is running.
  • Stop: tap Stop at any time; your Mac stops the task.
  • Live Screen and Take Over: see your Mac's screen, or control it yourself with the trackpad and keyboard. MacMermaid waits until you hand control back.
  • Away from home: after pairing at home, MacMermaid can reach your Mac over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Your Mac must be awake and online. MacMermaid asks for Face ID before connecting from away.
  • Voice: tap the microphone and speak your request. It sends when you finish speaking, or tap again to send sooner.
  • Send files: send files from your iPhone to your Mac when both are on the same network.

Common problems

My iPhone doesn't find my Mac

Check that MacMermaid is open on your Mac, both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, and Local Network is allowed for MacMermaid in iPhone Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.

I can't connect from away from home

Pair once on the same Wi-Fi first. Then make sure your Mac is awake, online and signed in to the same account.

The screen doesn't appear, or tasks can't click or type

On your Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and turn on MacMermaid under Screen Recording and Accessibility, then try again.

My Mac shows a prompt asking to control an app

The first time a task uses an app, macOS asks on the Mac whether MacMermaid may control it (Automation). This prompt can only be answered on the Mac.

MacMermaid says AI processing is off

Tasks and voice need your permission to send information for AI processing. Turn it on in Account › AI Processing, or tap Allow when MacMermaid asks. See the Privacy Policy for details.

MacMermaid says a usage limit was reached

The free usage limits reset over time. Try again later.
